Rite of Buddhism
Uposatha — the observance day.
New and full moon: precepts renewed by the laity, the rule recited among the monks.
⏱ twice monthly — new and full moon◌ monastics, joined by devout laity
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held
The uposatha inherits the old Indian lunar sabbath. On new- and full-moon days the laity take extra precepts and the monks recite the patimokkha — the whole monastic rule — in assembly, with a confession of breaches first. It has kept the community's calendar synced to the moon for twenty-five centuries.
