Christian Science (the Church of Christ, Scientist)

Movement·Founded 1879 CE·The church does not publish membership figures and is forbidden to by its own Manual, Article VIII, Section 28. Independent estimates for the late twentieth century range from under 100,000 to several hundred thousand and are not reconcilable. What can be counted is public: practitioners and teachers listed in the Christian Science Journal in the United States fell from 4,965 in January 1971 to fewer than a thousand, and branch churches from roughly 1,800 to about 1,000.

Rite of Christian Science (the Church of Christ, Scientist)

No preacher — the books are the pastor.

In 1895 Eddy ordained the Bible and Science and Health as the pastor of the church and abolished personal preaching. Two elected Readers read a lesson assembled from citations in both books, on one of twenty-six rotating subjects, and every Christian Science church in the world hears exactly the same lesson that week.

⏱ Weekly — the Lesson-Sermon on Sunday, and testimony on Wednesday evening◌ The congregation, with two elected Readers
What happensThe First Reader reads from Science and Health, the Second from the Bible, alternating through a lesson on one of twenty-six rotating subjects; no sermon is preached and no preacher speaks
What it needsTwo books, two Readers, and the Quarterly that sets the same lesson for every church on earth
What it aims atThat the pastor be the books rather than a person
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The abolition of preaching in 1895 is the church's most distinctive institutional act. Eddy ordained the Bible and Science and Health as pastor, and personal sermons stopped everywhere at once. Two Readers, elected for three-year terms and forbidden by the Manual from reading with theatrical emphasis or adding a word of their own, read alternately from the two books. The lesson is compiled in Boston in the Christian Science Quarterly, cycles through twenty-six subjects twice a year, and is the same in every branch church on earth on the same Sunday, which produces the unusual situation of a worldwide denomination with no preacher and no local doctrinal variation. Wednesday evening meetings are the exception: members stand and give testimonies of healing, and this is the only unscripted speech in the church's worship.
