Women were ordained from the beginning, and then largely stopped being. Bresee ordained women, and by 1908 a substantial share of Nazarene ministers were women. The proportion collapsed through the mid-twentieth century as the denomination professionalised and suburbanised, and recovering it has been official policy for decades with limited effect.
