Ascended beings are held to speak through a trained messenger. Mark Prophet held that office from 1958, Elizabeth Clare Prophet after 1973, and no one has held it since.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The messenger is the office on which the church rests. Mark Prophet said he received dictations from the master El Morya from 1958, delivered live before audiences and published weekly as Pearls of Wisdom. Elizabeth Clare Prophet took the office after his death in 1973 and delivered dictations for a quarter of a century, sometimes for hours at a stretch, in a distinct voice and cadence that recordings preserve. Since her withdrawal in 1999 no one has held it. The church now teaches and publishes the existing corpus, which is a substantial change in what kind of organisation it is, and members differ on whether the office will be filled again.
