The letters carried the authority.
For four decades the group was governed by mailed letters treated as current revelation. Members read the newest one and changed their lives that week; critics and former members describe the same mechanism.
For most of its existence the movement had no headquarters that members could find and no meetings that leadership attended. It was governed by the Mo Letters — mimeographed, illustrated, mailed to homes worldwide and read as the current word of God. A letter could change the movement's sexual ethics, dissolve its organisational structure or move thousands of people between countries within a month, and did. Sociologists studying the group in the 1980s described it as the purest case of government by post in modern religion. Former members describe the same mechanism as the reason nothing could be questioned locally.
