Story of Discordianism

The Original Snub.

Eris was left off the guest list for a wedding on Limbo Peak, so she rolled a golden apple marked KALLISTI — to the prettiest one — into the hall and left. The goddesses fought over it, the judgement fell to Paris, and the Trojan War followed. Discordians read it as a story about hosts, not about gods.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The Original Snub is Discordianism's only real myth and it is lifted intact from Greek material — the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, the uninvited Eris, the apple marked KALLISTI, the judgement of Paris, the war. What the Principia changes is the sympathy. In the classical telling Eris is the troublemaker; in the Discordian telling she is the guest who was deliberately left off a list and the discord is the entirely proportionate result. The reading generalises: most of what gets called chaos is somebody responding to exclusion, and the hosts who did the excluding are the ones who name it chaos. The Principia does not labour the point. It tells the story straight, in mock-scriptural English, and leaves the moral to the reader, which is consistent with a religion that forbids believing what it says.
