Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The Rasa'il al-Hikma — the Epistles of Wisdom — are 111 letters compiled in the eleventh century, and they are the clearest example of a scripture designed to be closed. Only the uqqal read them. Copies have leaked and been published by outsiders over the centuries, and the community regards those publications as neither authoritative nor complete. The faith's period of open proclamation lasted from 1017 to 1043, after which the doors were shut permanently.
