Al-Ghazali is the reason Sufism became mainstream rather than suspect. At the height of his career as the leading jurist of Baghdad he had a breakdown, could not lecture, abandoned his position, and spent eleven years wandering. He returned and wrote the Revival of the Religious Sciences, which reconstructed the entire body of Islamic practice with the interior dimension restored, arguing that law without inwardness is empty and inwardness without law is dangerous. Sunni orthodoxy largely accepted the settlement.
