Core tenet of The Eastern Catholic Churches

In communion with Rome, not absorbed by it.

Full communion with the pope, full retention of Eastern liturgy, law, and theology — unity, on this account, was never meant to mean uniformity.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The Eastern Catholic churches — Ukrainian Greek Catholic, Maronite, Melkite, Syro-Malabar and about twenty others — are in full communion with Rome while keeping Eastern liturgy, married clergy, and their own canon law. Their existence is contested from the Orthodox side, which regards most of them as the fruit of Catholic proselytism and calls the arrangement uniatism; Rome has since 1993 agreed not to pursue that model further while affirming the existing churches' legitimacy.
