Core tenet of The Eastern Catholic Churches

The East's inheritance is ours by right.

Icons, the Divine Liturgy, married priests: not concessions granted by Rome but patrimony the unions promised to preserve.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The claim these churches make is that Eastern Christianity is not a concession granted to them but their own inheritance held by right — that being Catholic does not require becoming Latin. Rome has formally agreed since Vatican II and has urged them to remove Latinizations their communities absorbed under pressure. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, banned and driven underground by Stalin from 1946 to 1989, is the largest.
