Core tenet of The Family International

The law is love, and nothing else survives it.

Berg's Law of Love held that any act done in genuine love is permitted. It made the group generous, mobile and fearless, and it is what the abuse was justified under.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The Law of Love was Berg's reduction of Christian ethics to a single principle: if an act is genuinely done in love and hurts no one, no other law applies to it. Members describe the freedom of it as the reason they joined — a movement with no respectability to protect, willing to live on nothing and go anywhere. The same doctrine, in the hands of a leader whose letters were treated as revelation, removed every boundary that might have limited what he sanctioned. Both facts belong to the same doctrine and the group's own later documents concede the second.
