Story of The Family International

The second generation.

Children raised in the communal homes were schooled inside them, moved between countries and, in the 1970s and 1980s, exposed to Berg's teachings on sex. Several have published accounts; one killed a former member and himself in 2005.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Children raised in the communal homes were educated inside them, moved frequently between countries, and, in the period before 1986, exposed to the sexual teaching. A number of the second generation have published accounts, given evidence in custody proceedings and campaigned publicly. On 8 January 2005 Ricky Rodriguez — Karen Zerby's son, raised as the group's prince and the subject of a published child-rearing manual — killed a former member who had abused him as a small child, and then himself in a car near Blythe, California, having recorded a video explaining what he intended. The group expressed grief and rejected responsibility. Former members treat the date as the movement's reckoning.
