David Berg, who was never seen.

He led a worldwide movement for twenty-five years by post, from addresses his own members did not know. Photographs of him are rare; the literature drew him as a lion.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Berg was born in 1919 to a family of travelling evangelists and served briefly as a Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor before losing the position. From the early 1970s he lived in hiding, moving between Europe and Latin America, and almost none of the movement's members ever saw him; the literature depicted him as a lion or a shepherd rather than photographing him. He died in Portugal in 1994, and his death was announced to members only afterwards. Leadership passed to Karen Zerby, whom he had named Maria, and to Steven Kelly.
