The samskaras — life, marked.

Sixteen classical rites from conception to cremation: the name-giving, the first solid food, the sacred thread, the wedding fire, the last fire. A life kept in ritual punctuation.

⏱ once each — the sixteen passages of a life◌ The family, a priest, and an almanac
What happensNaming on the eleventh day, first solid food, first haircut, the thread, marriage, and the last fire
What it needsA priest, a muhurta chosen from the almanac, and the relatives in one room
What it aims atTo mark a life at its joints — sixteen in the standard list, of which most families now keep four or five
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The samskaras are the life-cycle rites — sixteen in the classical list, of which perhaps five are widely performed now: name-giving, first feeding, the sacred thread, marriage, and cremation. They function as a theory of personhood built by stages rather than granted at birth, and the sacred thread ceremony in particular marks a second birth into study. Practice varies enormously by region, caste, and family, and the rites that have survived best are the two nobody skips: the wedding fire and the funeral fire.
