Rite of The International Society for Krishna Consciousness

Sixteen rounds, every day.

1,728 repetitions on 108 beads, usually finished before breakfast. It is the one commitment an initiate cannot quietly drop, and devotees count it in years.

⏱ Daily, sixteen rounds◌ Every initiated devotee, alone, usually before breakfast
What happensMove bead to bead, one maha-mantra per bead, 108 beads to a round, sixteen rounds a day
What it needsA tulasi-wood mala in its cloth bag, and about two hours
What it aims atAttention on the sound itself — the holy name is held to be Krishna, not a label for him
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

Sixteen rounds is 1,728 recitations of the sixteen-word mantra, and it takes about two hours done attentively. Initiated devotees vow it. Most do it before breakfast, standing or walking, often outdoors, and treat a day when it is not finished as a day owed. The number was Prabhupada's concession to Western students — he had begun by asking for sixty-four. Devotees measure their own practice in years of unbroken rounds, and the movement's pastoral literature is largely about what to do when the count is kept and the attention is not.
