The Hajj.
Millions in identical white cloth circling one stone house — rank erased, ummah made visible.
The Hajj is required once in a lifetime of every Muslim who can afford it and is physically able, and the conditionality is taken seriously — going into debt for it is discouraged. Its most striking feature is the leveling: pilgrims wear two unstitched white cloths, so a king and a laborer are visually indistinguishable, which Malcolm X described as the experience that broke his separatism. The rites re-enact Hagar's search for water and Abraham's trial, and roughly two million people perform them simultaneously, which is a logistical undertaking on the scale of a small state.
