A chain email claimed, wrongly, that a religion recorded by enough people would win official recognition. In England and Wales 390,127 wrote Jedi, making it the fourth largest answer to the religion question; New Zealand recorded the highest share anywhere. No agency counted it as a religion. The figure fell to 176,632 in 2011, and for 2021 the Office for National Statistics filed Jedi Knight under No religion.
