The Plymouth Brethren

Movement·Founded 1827 CE·Unknowable by design. The Open Brethren keep no central roll — assemblies are autonomous and many list themselves as no more than a Gospel Hall — and the various Exclusive connexions publish nothing except the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, which reports just over 55,000. Estimates for the whole movement run to well over a million worldwide, heavily weighted toward India, Africa and Latin America, and none of them is from a source that counts.

The shared center — held across the tradition
The church on earth is in ruins, and no one can rebuild it. The founding conviction: the visible church has failed so completely that no reformation or new denomination can restore it, and all a believer can do is leave the wreck and gather to the name of Christ with whoever else will. Every Brethren peculiarity follows from this one judgement. Go deeper — context & 1 source →
Held by most — broad, but not universal
The church will be taken out before the tribulation begins. Darby worked out in the 1830s that Christ's coming has two stages — a secret removal of the church, then a public appearing seven years later — and that Israel and the church are two separate peoples with separate destinies. Almost every rapture novel, prophecy chart and end-times film of the last century runs on his scheme. Go deeper — context →
