Every believer is a priest.
Direct access to God, no mediating caste — and so, eventually, ten thousand denominations.
The priesthood of all believers means that no mediating class is required between a person and God — anyone may read scripture, pray directly, and hear confession from a neighbor. Luther meant it as a leveling of spiritual status rather than an abolition of ministry, and he was alarmed when peasants drew political conclusions from it in 1525. The doctrine nonetheless did political work for centuries, and its fingerprints are on the development of literacy, vernacular publishing, and eventually democratic theory.
