Rajneesh — the master as a device.
He gave more than five thousand recorded discourses in Hindi and English, contradicted himself deliberately and often, and said the contradiction was the method rather than the mistake.
He was born Chandra Mohan Jain in Madhya Pradesh in 1931, taught philosophy at Jabalpur University, and began speaking publicly in the 1960s in terms designed to offend — on sex, on Gandhi, on socialism, on the Indian establishment. The recorded discourses run past five thousand and cover the Upanishads, the Dhammapada, Zen koans, Hasidic tales, Sufi stories and Jesus, treating each as material rather than as authority. He contradicted himself deliberately and told his audiences he was doing it, on the argument that a consistent system is something to hold on to and holding on was the disease. He was renamed Osho in 1989 and died in Pune in January 1990.
