The Bible, read from Zion.
The same book the missionaries brought, read the other way around: Ethiopia at the center, the king on the throne, and Babylon all around.
Rastafari reads the Bible against the grain of the people who brought it: Ethiopia is the center, Babylon is the present order, and the Solomonic line runs to Addis Ababa. The Kebra Nagast, a fourteenth-century Ethiopian text recounting the Queen of Sheba and the ark's journey to Ethiopia, is often held alongside it. There is deep suspicion of standard translations as deliberately corrupted, and reading is communal and argumentative rather than authoritative.
