Jah — a shortened form of the divine name in the King James Psalms — is God as immediate and indwelling rather than distant. The theological move that follows is the one that defines Rastafari: if Jah is in every person, then human dignity is not granted by any authority and cannot be removed by one. That claim, made by descendants of enslaved people in colonial Jamaica, is the movement's founding political fact as much as its theology.
