Sanzen — the interview.
The student brings their kōan answer to the master's room; most answers die there.
Sanzen (or dokusan) is the private interview: the student enters, bows, presents their understanding of the kōan, and the teacher accepts it or rings the bell to end the meeting, often within seconds. It happens repeatedly during retreats, and the pressure is intentional. Nothing about it is discussion — the demonstration is expected to be immediate and embodied, and a verbal explanation is usually the wrong answer by definition.
