The Church of Scientology

Movement·Founded 1954 CE·Sharply disputed. The church has claimed membership in the millions. National census counts and independent surveys return figures two to three orders of magnitude lower, and the church does not publish auditable numbers.

Engrams are recordings, and they can be discharged.

An engram is a moment of pain and unconsciousness recorded whole. Auditing locates it, runs it through until the charge is gone, and the church holds that the ability lost with it comes back.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

An engram, in Dianetics, is a full recording of a moment of physical pain and reduced consciousness — every word spoken in the room, whether or not the person could hear them. Hubbard held these fire later without being recognised, dictating behaviour and illness. Auditing runs the incident repeatedly until the charge is discharged and the recording becomes ordinary memory. The state called Clear is the point at which the reactive mind no longer holds any of them. The claim in the 1950 book was medical and specific; the church has since framed it in spiritual terms and does not present auditing as treatment. Independent replication of the original claims has not been produced.
