Core tenet of Smartism
The householder path is complete.
No renunciation required — the home is an adequate ashram.
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
Smartism's emphasis on the householder is a real theological position rather than a concession: the four stages of life are affirmed in order, and the householder stage — earning, marrying, raising children, hosting — is where dharma is actually practiced rather than a lesser condition to be escaped. Shankara, whose Advaita philosophy the tradition follows, was himself a renunciate, which makes the pairing an interesting internal tension.
