Five forms, one Brahman.
Vishnu, Shiva, Devi, Ganesha, Surya — worship any; all resolve into one.
Smartism is the tradition of the smriti-following brahmin householder, and its distinctive is deliberate non-exclusivity: the five deities of the panchayatana are worshipped together, with the devotee's chosen one at the center, on the philosophical basis that all are forms of the one Brahman. This is the source of the "all paths lead to the same summit" formulation that Westerners often take for Hinduism as a whole — it is in fact one school's position, and Vaishnavas and Shaivas frequently disagree with it.
