Rite of Sōtō
Oryoki.
The formal meal: nested bowls, precise gestures, nothing wasted — eating as zazen.
⏱ every meal, in the zendo◌ the assembly
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held
Ōryōki is the formal meal taken in nested bowls with an exact choreography — unwrapping, receiving, eating, cleaning the bowls with water and drinking it so nothing is wasted, rewrapping. It takes practice to do without error and is done in silence in the meditation hall. The form makes an ordinary act into a complete practice, which is the whole Sōtō argument enacted three times a day.
