The See of Peter may be vacant.

Sedevacantism, held by the movement's far edge and refused by most of it: a pope who teaches error may be no pope at all.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Sedevacantism — the position that the See of Peter has been vacant since Pius XII or John XXIII, because a heretic cannot be pope — is the most radical traditionalist conclusion and is held by a small minority within an already small movement. Most traditionalists reject it explicitly, since it leaves no functioning church. It appears here because it is the logical endpoint of the movement's premise, and the fact that most traditionalists decline to reach it is informative.
