Vishnu is the supreme reality.
The preserver, present in the world through his avatars — Krishna and Rama above all.
Vaishnavism is the largest Hindu tradition by adherents, and its distinctive is that the supreme is personal: Vishnu (or Krishna, depending on the sampradaya) is not an aspect of an impersonal absolute but the absolute itself, with a name, a form, and a disposition toward those who approach. That commitment sets the whole tradition against Advaita's reading, and the medieval theologians — Ramanuja, Madhva, Chaitanya — built rival systems specifically to defend it.
