The coven — or the path alone.
Traditionally thirteen at most, initiating in degrees; since the 1970s, as many Wiccans practice solo with a self-dedication as ever joined a coven.
Wicca began as a coven-and-initiation religion — Gardnerian and Alexandrian lines with three degrees, oath-bound material, and initiation only by an already-initiated priest or priestess of the opposite sex. Then Scott Cunningham and others published books arguing you could self-dedicate and practice alone, and the solitary path became the majority. The relationship between lineaged traditions and eclectic solitaries remains the community's main internal fault line.
