The zendo.
A teacher, a hall, and whoever sits. Transmission is person to person, and the cook is as senior as the scholar.
A zendo is a meditation hall run with exact form: how you enter, where you bow, which foot crosses the threshold, how you sit, how you eat. The forms are not fussiness — the argument is that when the body's behavior is completely specified, attention has nowhere to hide, and the practitioner meets their own resistance directly. Zen communities are also unusually explicit that the teacher's certification of a successor is the lineage's only credential, which has made verification scandals a recurring problem.
