Core tenet of Zoroastrianismheld by most

Fire is the visible form of truth.

Not worshipped — attended. Some temple fires have burned continuously for over a thousand years.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Zoroastrians are called fire-worshippers and consistently object: fire is a symbol and a focus of purity, not a deity. It is used as the direction of prayer the way Muslims face Mecca. The sacred fires in the great temples have burned continuously for centuries — the one at Yazd is claimed to have burned since the fifth century — and are tended by priests with masks over their mouths so that human breath does not pollute them.
