Figures

who it looks to — gods, spirits, ancestors; some rooms are empty on principle All 11 →
The ultimate — what this line takes as final
A Ahura Mazda — the Wise Lord. Uncreated, all-good creator of the good creation — worshipped through fire, which is his visible sign, not his image. Domain The good creation entireStanding Worshipped at the fire; the war's certain victor Meet them — context →
Gods & powers — the presences it names and addresses
T The Bounteous Spirit. In the Gathas the two twins who choose are Spenta Mainyu and Angra Mainyu, and Ahura Mazda is the father of neither choice — a distinction that keeps God out of the pairing. Later theology identified Spenta Mainyu with Ahura Mazda himself, which made the dualism cleaner and the Gathic text harder to read straight. Domain The creative principle by which Ahura Mazda actsStanding The distinction matters: in the Gathas the twins are Spenta Mainyu and Angra Mainyu, which keeps Ahura Mazda out of the pairing entirely Meet them — context →
M Mithra. His name is the ordinary word for contract, and breaking one is a personal offence against him — including a contract with someone of another religion, which the text states explicitly. He is older than Zarathustra, was absorbed rather than rejected, and stands at the bridge weighing souls. Domain Contract, oath, the light before sunrise, and judgment at the bridgeStanding His name means covenant, and breaking one is an offence against him personally. He travelled west into Roman Mithraism, which is a different religion and is regularly confused with this one Meet them — context →
T The Amesha Spentas. Six radiant emanations — Good Mind, Truth, Devotion among them — through whom the Wise Lord tends the world; near-angels, near-virtues, both at once. Meet them — context →
A Anahita. The waters, and the strength that comes with them. Kings sacrificed to her for victory, the Sasanians endowed her shrines heavily, and the ruined temple at Kangavar is one of the largest stone structures in Iran. Iranian Zoroastrians still make visits to springs and mountain shrines associated with her. Domain Waters, fertility, and the ritual purity of what flowsStanding The great goddess of the tradition. Sasanian kings endowed her shrines heavily, and Iranian Zoroastrians still visit springs associated with her Meet them — context →
S Sraosha. Obedience, or more precisely hearkening — the one who hears prayer and brings it up. He never sleeps, patrols the world at night with a raised mace, and guards the soul for the three days after death. His bird is the cock, which is why killing one is a serious matter. Domain Prayer heard, the soul's protection for three nights after death, and the fight against demons at nightStanding The most-invoked being in daily practice after Ahura Mazda. The Srosh Baj is said before nearly everything Meet them — context →
F Fire. Zoroastrians have spent two and a half thousand years telling people they do not worship it. It is faced, not addressed — the clearest, least corruptible thing available, so you turn toward it to pray, exactly as a Muslim turns toward Mecca. It is fed sandalwood by a masked priest so that his breath does not touch it. Domain Every fire, from the hearth to the Atash BahramStanding Zoroastrians object, wearily and repeatedly, to being called fire-worshippers. The fire is faced, not addressed — it is the clearest thing there is, and you pray toward clarity Meet them — context →
Prophets & messengers — who carries the word between
T The Saoshyant. A future saviour born of a virgin who bathes in the lake where Zarathustra's seed is miraculously preserved, who will raise the dead and preside over the renovation. Whether Jewish and Christian messianism drew on this during the Persian period is argued about; the chronology makes it hard to rule out. held by most Domain The final renovation, the raising of the dead and the last judgmentStanding Three future saviours at thousand-year intervals in the developed scheme. The influence on Jewish and Christian messianism is argued about and is hard to dismiss Meet them — context →
Founders & teachers — the ones who opened the way
Z Zarathustra. A trained priest who became a critic of the priesthood, working in eastern Iran or Central Asia somewhere between 1500 and 600 BCE — the range is that wide and the argument is unresolved. He is not divine, is not prayed to, and in the Gathas complains about having no cattle and no men. Domain The revelation, and the demand that people chooseStanding Dated anywhere from 1500 to 600 BCE and the argument is unresolved. He is not divine and is not prayed to Meet them — context →
Ancestors & spirits — the dead, the local, the household
T The fravashis. Every person has one, and it existed before the body did. The tradition's striking claim is that these pre-existent souls were offered the choice of staying safe or entering the world to fight, and chose to come — so being alive is a piece of volunteering. At the year's end they come home for ten days. Domain Protection of the house and the line; they fight on the good sideStanding Invited home for ten days at the year's end. The tradition holds they existed before birth and chose to enter bodies in order to fight Meet them — context →
Adversaries — named in order to be refused
A Angra Mainyu — the lie. The destructive spirit, source of every corruption: a real adversary, but a doomed one — the war ends, and he loses. Meet them — context →

Core Tenets

12 — a sample of the center, never the sum All 12 →
The shared center — held across the tradition
Ahura Mazda did not make evil. This is the point of the whole system. Evil is not a test, not a permitted shadow and not part of a larger plan — it is an uncreated hostile intelligence that got in. The cost is that God is not omnipotent in the way later monotheisms would want; the benefit is that the problem of evil does not arise. Go deeper — context →
Existence is a war between truth and the lie. Asha against druj: Ahura Mazda's good creation is contested by a real adversary — and the war has a winner. Go deeper — context →
The world is good, and enjoying it is correct. Matter is not a trap and the body is not a prison. There is no fasting from food, no celibacy, no monasticism and no virtue in poverty. The tradition treats gloom as collaboration with the enemy and holds that a person who weakens themselves has removed a soldier from the field. Go deeper — context →
Every person is drafted by their choices. Good thoughts, good words, good deeds — free choice is the battlefield; neutrality is not on offer. Go deeper — context →
The Bridge of the Separator. Three days after death the soul comes to a bridge, which widens for the good and narrows to a blade's edge for the wicked. The thoughts, words and deeds are weighed by Mithra, Sraosha and Rashnu, and the soul meets its own conscience — beautiful or hideous, depending on what it has been doing. Go deeper — context →
The end is renovation. Frashokereti: evil defeated finally, the dead raised, the world made fresh — the template later apocalypses inherited. Go deeper — context →
A corpse is the greatest pollution there is. Death is the enemy's clearest victory, and a dead body is where his power is densest. It may not be given to fire, which is sacred; nor to water; nor to earth, which it would defile. Hence exposure — the one method that pollutes nothing. Go deeper — context →
You are choosing, right now. The Gathas repeatedly address hearers as people who must decide between two ways, and insist the choice is real and unforced. There is no predestination, no inherited guilt and no original sin. A child is not accountable until initiation, and after it everything counts. Go deeper — context & 1 source →
Asha — truth, rightness and the order of things, in one word. It covers the truth of a statement, the rightness of an act and the regularity of the seasons at once, because the tradition takes these to be the same thing. Its opposite, druj, is the lie — which is likewise a moral failure and a disorder in the world, not merely a false sentence. Go deeper — context & 1 source →
Six creations, six guardians. The Amesha Spentas are attributes of Ahura Mazda and also persons, and each has a piece of creation in their charge: sky, water, earth, plants, cattle and humanity. Caring for those six things is therefore not stewardship in the modern environmental sense but direct service to a divine being. Go deeper — context →
Held by most — broad, but not universal
In the end everyone is saved. The developed eschatology has the dead raised, the whole of creation passed through a flood of molten metal — pleasant as warm milk to the good, agonising to the wicked — and then all souls, including those in hell, restored. Evil is not merely defeated but abolished, and hell empties. Go deeper — context →
Fire is the visible form of truth. Not worshipped — attended. Some temple fires have burned continuously for over a thousand years. Go deeper — context →
