Core tenet of Seventh-day Adventism

Christ's return is near and literal.

The Advent that named the movement: visible, personal, soon.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Adventism grew from the Millerite movement, whose prediction of Christ's return in 1844 failed publicly — an event the tradition calls the Great Disappointment and does not hide. The reinterpretation that followed, that Christ had entered a heavenly sanctuary phase rather than returning to earth, is the tradition's distinctive doctrine and the point non-Adventist Christians most often contest.
