Nothing doctrinal divides us from the Assyrian church.
Both bodies confess the same christology, use the same Hudra and the same Anaphora of Addai and Mari, and ordain in the same East Syriac tradition. Reunification has been discussed formally since 2010; a joint declaration was reached in 2015, one patriarch abdicated in 2022 in the hope of speeding it, and the two churches are still separate.
The Assyrian Church of the East and the Ancient Church of the East began formal reunification talks in 2010 and issued a joint synodal declaration in 2015 committing to unity. Progress has been repeatedly interrupted: Mar Yakoob III Danil, elected in June 2022, abdicated in August of the same year saying he did so in the interest of the church and of the reunification talks, and Mar Gewargis III Younan was elected in November 2022 and inaugurated in Baghdad on 9 June 2023. Sticking points reported by both sides include the calendar, the status of clergy ordained during the separation, and property. Neither church has a doctrinal objection to the other.
