Bishops, and a body that keeps changing its own name.
River Brethren by nickname, Brethren in Christ by Civil War necessity, and since 2020 many American congregations use the trade name BIC. The structure is episcopal-lite: bishops over regional conferences, salaried pastors, and a General Conference that legislates.
Governance sits between the congregationalism of the Mennonites and the episcopacy of the Methodists: bishops lead regional conferences, pastors are salaried and seminary-trained, and a General Conference legislates for the whole. Messiah University in Grantham, Pennsylvania, founded in 1909 as Messiah Bible School, is the denomination's institutional anchor in the United States. Brethren in Christ U.S. reports nearly 250 congregations; it does not publish a stable membership figure, and the drift toward generic evangelical identity — including the use of BIC as a trade name and the disappearance of denominational branding from many congregations — is itself a live internal argument about whether an Anabaptist body can survive being unmarked.
