Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

Exclusive psalmody — singing only the biblical psalms, unaccompanied — follows directly from the regulative principle, and some Reformed churches still practice it. Others sing hymns. The metrical psalters produced for this purpose, particularly in Scotland and the Netherlands, are a substantial body of religious literature, and the a cappella psalm singing of the Scottish Gaelic tradition has been an acknowledged influence on American gospel and blues.
