Faith and works cooperate.
Salvation is grace lived out in love — precisely the point Luther pressed against.
The Reformation's central fight was over this, and both sides have moved: the 1999 Joint Declaration between the Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation stated a shared understanding that we are justified by grace through faith, with good works following as its fruit. The remaining differences are real but narrower than the sixteenth century's rhetoric suggests, and the Catholic position was never that one earns salvation — it is that grace, once received, actually transforms and that the transformation is real.
