Confession.
Sins spoken aloud to a priest and absolved — mercy with a procedure.
Confession — reconciliation — requires naming specific sins to a priest, who is bound by an absolute seal that has no exceptions in canon law, including under civil subpoena. Frequency has dropped enormously since the mid-twentieth century, which the church treats as a pastoral crisis. The practice's logic follows from the sacramental system: sin damages a real relationship with the church as well as with God, so restoration involves both.
