Study as devotion.
The Analects begin with the joy of learning; the examination hall was a temple of its own.
Confucianism made study a moral practice rather than an accumulation of information: the Analects opens with the pleasure of learning and applying, and the goal is self-cultivation rather than credentials. Institutionalized, this produced the imperial examination system — thirteen centuries of staffing a state by essay — which is the most consequential thing Confucianism ever built and also its most criticized, since memorization eventually crowded out the cultivation it was meant to serve.
