Congregationalism

Denomination·Founded 1582 CE·No single body counts Congregationalists. Most of the American churches went into the United Church of Christ in 1957; the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches and the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference each hold several hundred congregations, and the Congregational Federation is the surviving English body.

the ethic — what it asks of a life
Freedom for the congregation was not freedom of religion. Massachusetts Bay was founded by people escaping compulsion who immediately established compulsion: Baptists whipped, Quakers hanged on Boston Common between 1659 and 1661, Roger Williams banished for saying the magistrate had no authority over conscience.
