Core tenet of Dvaita Vedānta

Self and God are eternally distinct.

Madhva's answer to Shankara: difference is real, and devotion requires two.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Madhva's Dvaita is the direct refutation of Advaita, and it is uncompromising: there are five eternal, real distinctions — between God and soul, God and matter, soul and matter, one soul and another, one thing and another. The self is dependent on God and never becomes God. Madhva went further than any other Vedantin in also teaching that some souls are eternally damned, a position with no parallel elsewhere in Hindu thought and often compared to Calvinism.
