Core tenet of Heathenry (Ásatrú)held by most

The lore guides; it does not bind.

Eddas and sagas are the record of the old ways, read seriously — but Heathenry has no scripture and wants none.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Modern Heathenry is a reconstruction and says so. The Eddas were written down by Christians two centuries after conversion, the archaeological record is partial, and much of what practitioners do is scholarly inference plus present-day judgment. That honesty is itself a distinctive: rather than claiming unbroken transmission, most Heathens describe the lore as evidence to reason from. It also means practice varies widely and there is no authority to settle disputes.
