Diwali.
Lamps in every window for Rama's return and the victory of light — the year's brightest night.
Diwali is not one festival but several observed together: Rama's return to Ayodhya in the north, Krishna's defeat of Narakasura in the south, and everywhere the worship of Lakshmi, who is said to visit lit and cleaned houses. Businesses close their books and start new ones, which is why the tradition's prosperity goddess sits at the center. Jains mark Mahavira's liberation on the same night and Sikhs mark Guru Hargobind's release from prison, so a single row of lamps carries at least four meanings.
