The cloak on the road from Nikolsburg.
Expelled in 1528 and travelling with nothing certain ahead of them, the group stopped, laid a cloak on the ground, and each person put on it everything they had. The Chronicle sets this down as the founding act, and every colony still runs on it.
Das grosse Geschichtbuch, the Chronicle, was begun in the 1560s and continued into the seventeenth century, then copied by hand down the generations; it is the single most detailed narrative any Anabaptist group kept of itself, running from the Zurich baptisms through the Moravian golden years, the Turkish and Habsburg destructions, and the migrations. The cloak episode of 1528 is told plainly and without miracle, and that is how it is read: not as a vision but as a decision taken on a road by people with nowhere to go. The Chronicle is unsparing about internal failure too — it records the schisms, the leaders deposed for greed, and the colonies that gave up community of goods and were readmitted.
