The two Eids.

Eid al-Fitr breaks the month of fasting with feast and alms; Eid al-Adha remembers Abraham's ram with a sacrifice shared three ways — family, friends, poor.

⏱ twice a year — after Ramadan, and at pilgrimage time◌ everyone: the fast-breakers and the sacrificers
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The two Eids are structurally different. Eid al-Fitr ends Ramadan with a compulsory alms payment (zakat al-fitr) that must be given before the prayer so the poor can also celebrate — the timing is the doctrine. Eid al-Adha, during Hajj, commemorates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son (Ishmael in the Islamic account) with an animal sacrifice divided in three: family, friends, and the poor. In much of the world it is the largest annual distribution of meat to people who otherwise rarely eat it.
