The Night Journey.
The Prophet carried by night to Jerusalem and through the heavens — where the five prayers were fixed.
The Isra and Mi'raj — the night journey to Jerusalem and the ascent through the heavens — is the source of the five daily prayers in the traditional account: Moses, encountered on the way, repeatedly sends Muhammad back to negotiate the number down from fifty. It also establishes Jerusalem's standing as Islam's third holy city, since the Farthest Mosque is identified with the site. Whether the journey was bodily or visionary was debated from the beginning, and the tradition preserves both positions.
