Live the Word of Wisdom.
No alcohol, tobacco, coffee, or tea; grain and fruit in season — an 1833 health code kept as covenant, marking the body as something entrusted.
The Word of Wisdom, received by Joseph Smith in 1833, was originally framed as counsel rather than commandment and became a strict requirement in the early twentieth century — a change the church discusses openly. It prohibits alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea (with caffeinated soda a matter of long-running internal argument), and recommends grain, fruit in season, and sparing use of meat. Its practical effect is a visible marker of membership and, epidemiologically, unusually low rates of several diseases among observant Latter-day Saints.
