Core tenet of Nichiren Buddhism

Chanting the daimoku awakens buddhahood.

Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō — the title of the sutra, chanted, is the practice entire: cause and effect of awakening in one act.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

The daimoku — Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, devotion to the Lotus Sūtra — is chanted repeatedly before a mandala scroll, and the claim is that the title contains the entire sūtra's power, so that chanting it activates the buddhahood already present in the practitioner. Soka Gakkai, the largest modern Nichiren organization, has carried the practice worldwide and frames it in terms of concrete life results, which has drawn both large membership and criticism for prosperity-teaching resemblances.
