The Lotus Sūtra is the Buddha's complete teaching.
All previous sutras were preparation; the Lotus is the point — and it declares buddhahood open to everyone, now.
Nichiren, a thirteenth-century Japanese monk, concluded that the Lotus Sūtra alone contains the complete teaching and that other practices were not merely inferior but actively harmful in the current age. He said so publicly, repeatedly, to the authorities, and was exiled twice and nearly executed. That exclusivism is unusual in Buddhism and is the tradition's defining characteristic — Nichiren Buddhism is the branch that says the others are wrong.
